Miss Earth SA Finalist partners with Water Wise to educate learners
Teaching kids to love their environment
The 23-year-old Miss Earth South Africa finalist, Abongile Zwane dedicated her day to learners at Funda Ujabule Primary School in Pimville, where she educated the learners about ‘everything earth’.
Miss Earth South Africa is a program that aims to empower young South African women with the knowledge and platform to create a sustainable difference in our plight to combat the destruction of our natural heritage and Zwane is definitely leading by example.

South Africa is a water stressed country, and the water resources are under tremendous pressure from a growing population, ongoing development, pollution, wetland destruction, alien invasive plants and the effects of global warming. In partnership with Water Wise, Rand Water’s environmental brand, Zwane spent time with learners from Grade R to 2 at the school, educating them about water sustainability.
Water Wise is a campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the need to value water and to use it wisely.
Zwane said that it is important to teach children early about water conservation so they can build smart habits that will last a lifetime.

“While we might not be in a drought here, we can all still make our best effort to reduce our water footprint. It is very important for kids to know the importance of sustaining our four elements of nature, namely: earth, air, water, fire for the next generation,” Zwane said.
Water Wise uses Hands-on activities, games, puppet shows, experiments, nature Walks, roadshows, exhibitions and education Material to create awareness about water conservation.
“Our job is to teach these kids about the basic concepts of water conservation and for those who want to learn more about water-wise, they can visit our Rand Water website, www.randwater.co.za , there is a water-wise sign and if you click on it, it automatically takes you to water-wise website, there are also teacher resources and information that is linked to the education curriculum,” Sizwe Mndawe, who facilitates the environmental education activities of the Water Wise.
The following are some ways to save water:
1. Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth
2. Place a cistern displacement device in your toilet cistern
3. Take a shorter shower.
4. Always use full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher
5. Fix a dripping tap.
6. Water your garden with a watering can rather than a hosepipe.
7. Fill a jug with tap water and place this in your fridge. This will mean you do not have to leave the cold tap running for the water to run cold before you fill your glass.
