The Totalsports Women’s Race will once again boast a stellar line up of elite athletes taking part in support of bringing awareness to the breast cancer pandemic. The race will take place this Friday, August 9 and will be taking place in three different cities on the same day for the first time since the race’s inception.
Athletes such as Glenrose Xaba, who always makes sure she is in the top 10 of any race she takes part in and Annie Bothma who is the defending champion for the Cape Town race. The race will take place in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town with each city boasting its set of elite athletes. Durban will have Janet Dlamini and Jenna Chanellor while Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively will see Glenrose Xaba, Lebo Phalula, Zinhle Xiniwe and Annie Bothma taking part.
Bothma said this race was special for her as it was the first 10km she ran when she started her career as a professional athlete.

“Last year I got to line up after not competing in road races for three years while on a full scholarship in America. Crossing the finish line first was ‘a dream come true’. It is amazing that the Totalsports Women’s Race is hosted in honour of women and supports PinkDrive. It is a great way to create and promote awareness about cancer in South Africa, and potentially beyond,” Bothma continued. Her hope for this year’s race is a successful title defense.
Xaba, who will be running the race for the third time said she planned on securing a spot on the podium and is also working towards winning the race. “I am looking forward to a great race with a great vibe and support. I love that the Totalsports Women’s Race supports women. It is really special to be recognised as athletes,” she said.
Elite athletes often use short races such as the Totalsports Women’s race as practice for bigger qualifying races and Chanellor is no different. “It is an honour to run for those who are fighting for their lives. I have lost a few friends to cancer so it is close to my heart. The atmosphere on race day is electric. It really is a fun morning out amongst so many beautiful women. I have no expectations as I have been training for longer distances, but I am looking forward to getting some speed back into the legs while challenging my PBs,” she concluded.
The Totalsports Women’s race is an initiative that has partnered with the Pink Drive to bring awareness to breast cancer. Women will receive free breast examinations and information about breast cancer on the day while funds will also be donated to the fight against cancer.
