Juggling motherhood and School: Shaunice Jacobs story

About three years ago Shaunice Jacobs fell pregnant while she was in Grade 11, failed the year and had to raise her son.

Shaunice Jacobs is a twenty-four-year-old who recently completed her matric (Class of 2019) at Coronationville Secondary School.

About three years ago, Jacobs fell pregnant while she was in Grade 11, failed the year and had to raise her son.

“At first, I felt like it was the end of me but then I told myself that I will go back and redo the Grade for my child this time because now I have someone who depends on me. I returned to school, I passed Grade 11 and now I have completed my Grade 12 with a diploma pass.”

“I thought that it was pointless going to school because how will it benefit my child at that point, I was also still breastfeeding at the time but when I got to my senses and thought if I have to sit at home for the rest of my life, how will I be able to support my child financially.

“By coming back to school and completing my matric at least I know that I will be able to do something better with my life.”

Jacobs shared how much she appreciates her single mother’s help, especially during her matric year.

When asked what her study schedule looked like as hers had to be different from her classmates, Jacobs shared: “I still had to look after my child while studying so I had to divide my hours to get my studies done too.

“My mother looked after my son during the times that I had to study, there were times when he was difficult because he just wanted to be with me but I had to run to my room to study.”

Even though Jacobs passed her matric, she is not happy with her business studies results so she will be rewriting that subject this year.

She also said that she wanted to become a doctor but did not take Life Science as one of her subjects and therefore she will have to change her career path.

Jacobs’ son is going to three years old this year and she would like to thank a few people who have supported her through motherhood and school: “ I want to thank my mum and sister Stacey and Vanessa Jacobs for everything that they have done for me and I would also like to thank Muqseen Meyers who is my child’s father, he finished school the year before and that also motivated me to come back and finish matric.”
