Recycling comes with many benefits

Recycling conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals, it increases economic security by tapping a domestic source of materials.

According to recyclinginternational.com, South Africa sends around 95 million tonnes of waste to its 826 landfill sites and less than 40% of the materials are recycled.

Additionally, the nation produces 65 million tonnes of hazardous waste which only 6% is recycled.

The website engineeringnews.co.za, indicates that plastic recycling in the country has been on the increase for the past seven to eight years, with more than 334 727 tons recycled back into raw material.

Recycling is not a challenging activity at all, one can start at home by simply creating bins for the different materials, you can divide the items into glass, plastic, cans, and paper, there are other options.

Once you have your bins, it becomes easier, you can have an extra bin which will be for your house waste if we can call it that or you can go a little further by using waste such as old fruits and vegetables or cut-offs to create compost for your garden.

Once a week Pikitup comes to collect your waste, if you are not interested in going to the recycling places to get money for the recyclable items then you can always give it to the people who recycle, they usually come on the waste collection days to your area.
