100 recycled bags donated to Primary Schools in Riverlea
The bags were donated at Riverlea, Wilhelmina Hoskins and TC Esterhuysen Primary Schools.
Officials from the community development programme under the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) visited Riverlea Primary School to donate bags to the learners.
The donations were done by Busi Khumalo and her colleagues.
“We are based in Johannesburg and work in the Wards of Region B, part of Region C and D. Today, we are in Riverlea to hand out bags to the learners. Our first school is Riverlea Primary, we will then go to Wilhelmina Hoskins Primary School and TC Esterhuysen Primary School.
“We are donating a total of 100 school bags to the three primary schools. We are using the old banner material which Nando’s used to advertise with, so we are using that material by recycling and using it as bags. My colleagues and I came together and asked Nando’s to do some recycling and they came up with the bag idea,” explained Khumalo.

She added that they as community development workers work with all stakeholders in the communities and bring government services to the people.
When asked why are the schools selected, Khumalo explained that they go to the underprivileged schools in the communities and from there rely on the teachers to select who the children are who may need new bags.
“There are children who do not have school bags because their parents cannot afford it,” she said.
Susan Tshabalala who is also part of the community development programme shared: “This initiative has taught us that there are needy children in our communities, you can go around and hear different stories of peoples struggles.
“I think we will make more bags because we see that there is a need and I believe that it is an on-going partnership and initiative with Nando’s.” Khumalo concluded:
“We would like to thank Nando’s for this initiative as this is the second year running with this school bag initiative.”
