Universal Red Racing and another season of dominance

Covid restrictions, empty stands, and packed schedule are just some of the hurdles Universal Racing had to jump.

Universal Racing certified their credentials as a motoring powerhouse with yet another dominant display over the season, despite a difficult year and clinching the Polo Cup Series’ Team of the Year accolade.

2019’s Rookie of the Year, Dairo Busi’s fourth-place finish with a 22-point lead at the Port Elizabeth’s Aldo Scribante racetrack was enough to take home the Championship with his teammate, Clinton Bezuidenhout finishing second in the Championship table.

Dr. Johan Pretorius, the team leader of Universal Motorsport and Chief Executive Officer of Universal Healthcare had nothing but praise for his young prodigies.

“It’s very rare to win both first and second place in a national championship, but then, this season is one for the history books. Universal Motorsport is the title sponsor for the 2020 Volkswagen Polo Cup championship through the Oettinger brand, so the team was anxious to perform well. Covid-19 made this a difficult series, but they continued to work hard on their fitness and were using race simulators during the hard lockdown, so they lost none of their edge,” he said.

“It’s just a dream come true to be in a team like this. They’re so professional. I can’t wait to celebrate with the people whom I owe it to. I was a rookie last year and I couldn’t have dreamed of winning it this year,” Busi said after his Polo Cup triumph.

Motorsport had been suspended in South Africa as part of the country’s Covid response strategy to slow down infections. A return in August forced a packed schedule that saw two early rounds at Pretoria’s Zwartkops Raceway, one round at the Red Star Raceway near Delmas, and then off to the Eastern Cape on the 30th of October.

Other highlights for the Universal team included JP van der Walt who won 2020’s Most Improved Driver while Racing star, Jeffrey Kruger narrowingly finished second in the GTC SupaCup Championship the Zwartkops Raceway in Centurion this past weekend but will still fight for 2020’s Lotus Challenge title at Red Star this weekend.
