Netball South Africa suspends all action with immediate effect
The decision was unanimous and taken as a precaution in light of South Africa's rising Covid-19 cases.
The Netball South Africa Executive Committee, led by President Cecilia Molokwane, announced the suspension of all netball action with immediate effect on Friday.
The decision was unanimous and taken as a precaution, in light of South Africa’s rising Covid-19 cases during the second wave of the outbreak. between 7 and 10 January 2021, South Africa has recorded 82 006 positive Covid cases, the starling figures paint a bleak image of what may lie ahead.
“As the country continues to see COVID 19 numbers rising, it is very scary seeing what is going on around us. We see numbers rising and these numbers are names of people that we know.
“As an Executive, it was very important for us to decide to postpone all our planned activities until further notice. We will continue to take lead from the government and consult all relevant stakeholders as we take all the much-needed steps to ensure that we protect lives,” said Netball South Africa President Cecilia Molokwane.
The suspension will see the postponement of activities which include the Under 21 training camp previously scheduled for 11 – 15 January 2021, The SPAR Challenge which was set to be held in Cape Town between from 20th to the 27th of January 2021, and the Male National Championships will also come to a halt.
Molokwane and her executive will continue to be in communication with the Department of Health, as well as the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture as the situation is monitored before further decisions are taken. The President of Netball SA also encouraged people to follow all the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families as stipulated by health authorities.
“I think it is also important that we take this time and continue to use this moment to educate our people about the importance of adhering to health regulations and protocols around COVID,” concluded Molokwane.
