Soweto’s young talents to be showcased in Central Western Jabavu
Despite the event set in a competition-style format, co-founder of the initiative, Mbali Nyathi said it was not a competition.
Young dancers, singers, and performers are set to go toe-to-toe in Central Western Jabavu. The various artists with different skills will take to the stage to showcase their talents. Despite the event set in a competition-style format, the co-founder of the initiative, Mbali Nyathi said it was not a competition.
“We don’t want to see it as a competition and we won’t conduct it like that. The aim was to gather around the various artists from Soweto and give them one platform to showcase their talent. It will help them in terms of improving their craft, but also in terms of networking with artists. Who knows? Maybe some collaborations can arise from that,” she said.
The event is will feature young artists in different mediums aged 13 to 25. Nyathi said these were the people who needed the support most.
“Young people need our backing as the community. We will have motivational speaking on the day and an anti-drug activist to speaking to young people about the dangers of substance abuse. We also want to educate about Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The event is organised by various organisations that work with young artists. Nyathi said the collaborations between Soweto’s organisations would be key in the success of future projects.
“I’ve been working young girls for the pageant, but I’ve been very fortunate to meet with people who are working young kids around Soweto as well and we decided on doing this event. I think this is the way forward, for all of us to work together,” Nyathi said.
Nyathi confirmed that parents were also encouraged to attend the event as the support would mean a lot to the young performers. The outdoor event, which will be held at Duma Street by the circle, is scheduled to begin at 15h00 on May 1 and is part of the build-up to Nyathi’s annual Lathi-Tha Modeling Pageant contest.
