Locals divided as country moves to Level 2

In his address, President Ramaphosa identified the rise in covid infections as the primary reason for the adjustment.

Amidst a spike in positive covid cased recorded in the country and a disappointingly slow vaccine rollout, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country would be moving back to level 2 regulations.

Locals are still divided on the decision by President Ramaphosa and the Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) to send the country back to Level 2. Ramaphosa addressed the country on Sunday evening and announced the adjusted regulations. In his address, Ramaphosa identified the rise in covid infections as the primary reason for the adjustment.

“But now, after several months of low transmission, the number of infections has begun to rise sharply in several parts of the country. We have seen a sustained increase over the last four weeks. Over the last seven days, we have seen an average of 3,745 daily new infections,” he said during the address.

Locals though are less than convinced. Kamogelo Lebusa baled the new spike on the government’s slow vaccine rollout.

“We wouldn’t have a third wave approaching now if we had vaccinated enough people. Our vaccine programme has been very slow compared to other countries it’s a disgrace that we are in June and haven’t even vaccinated 3% of South Africa,” she said.

Meanwhile, Zola Mkhuswa said he was worried about what the regulations would mean for those who work in the restaurant industry.
“The industry has already been struggling to recover, this might be the last straw for many of them. I think our only solution is to speed up vaccination as another lockdown will cost people jobs,” said Khuswa said.

In closing his address, Ramaphosa urged South Africans to be courageous as the country braces for another wave of the pandemic.

“I ask you to summon your strength, your courage, and your tenacity as South Africans to stand together and to hold back this third wave,” he concluded.
