Chubby reveals plans to help communities through music

During her set, Chubby treated music lovers with a string of unreleased songs such as Thethelela, Isizwe and Icala.

Music has the power to help in the fight against social injustices and to help communities. This was according to singer-songwriter Chubby. She was reflecting on her recent live performance at the Local Medicinal Concert held at Niki’s Jazz Pub in late June.

During her set, Chubby treated music lovers with a string of unreleased songs such as Thethelela, Isizwe and Icala which features 2019 latin Grammy Award winner Gianni Bardaro.

“I think music defiantly has the power to change lives,” said Chubby.

“We don’t have these conversations because we sometimes feel ashamed. With my music, I want to start those conversations and touch people’ lives, not just at the top but also deep within communities,” she said.

The singer also revealed plans to go on a community and school tour once lockdown regulations were eased. This she said, was part of

“We want to start at the root. Issues like GBV should be addressed at youth level because children grow up with these things, some even unknowingly. There also issues like bullying at schools, all these things converge into one big problem when a child grows.”

Asked where she draws her inspiration from, Chubby said her music is personal experiences and of those close to her.

“I think we you have been given a gift for music or writing you have to use it to help people. But more so than that, I speak as a victim of these issues, I speak as a victim of sexual abuse and Gender-Based Violence. The challenge society has is that we keep quiet abuse these issues, I also kept quiet for a long time. It’s only recently that I have decided to speak out,” she said.

Chubby is on the back of an EP titled Umenzi Wezinto with DJ Kafi that is available on digital streaming platforms.
