The 40/40 challenge comes to Thaba Jabula Secondary
A social media post by philanthropist, Collen Mashawana has inspired individuals and communities to step up.
One hundred hygiene packs were handed over to the grade 12 learners at Thaba Jabula Secondary in Klipspruit on Thursday afternoon.
The initiative was the brainchild of philanthropist, Collen Mashawana who challenged individuals and organisations to do something positive for their communities as part of the celebrations for his 40th birthday – the 40/40 challenge.
The Nhlanhla Tshabalala Foundation (NTF) and Imbokodo Building heeded this call and teamed up with the Collen Mashawana Foundation to donate dignity packs to the learners of Thaba Jabula.

“We saw Mr Collen Mashawana share the post and we decided to take on the challenge. We had already been planning a collaboration with Mbokodo Building and this was a great opportunity to apply it. Collen is someone I really look up to, and we are all inspired by the work he has done,” said NTF founder, Nhlanhla Tshabalala.
In addition to the donation of hygiene products, the day featured entertainment, meals and career guidance talks from women working in fields largely dominated by men. Managing Director of Mbokodo, Thandeka Nombanjinji-Nzama said they wanted to empower the learners.
“We wanted to show to them the opportunities that are available to them. We wanted to make sure that not only are just bringing hygiene packages, but we are also imparting important knowledge and guidance to help them thrive in the careers they choose,” she said.
One of the learners who attended the event was Tholoana kokotela (18).
“Through this event, I have learned that certain jobs are not only for me and can be done by females too. Foundations like these are important because they come to give us advice and guidance,” the grade 12 learner said.
Twenty more packs were handed over to child-headed homes around Soweto.
