Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital using the cluster approach to address surgical backlogs

Gauteng health department says the backlogs are due to the global pandemic.

The Gauteng Department of Health had previously stated that as of Wednesday, July 30, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital had over 7000 people on the waiting list for different surgeries. To deal with the backlogs, the hospital has started referring surgeries to other hospitals within its clusters such as Thelle Mogoerane, Leratong, and Ekhuruleni hospitals.

The Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital has also increased its theatre capacity to accommodate more surgeries from Bara.

The department also stated that the backlog is due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The onset of COVID-19 pandemic last year has led to many planned surgeries being put on hold as the health system was repurposed to focus on the coronavirus. These affected various elective surgeries which include knee, hip, cataract, maxilo facial, urology, tumor and sepsis amongst others,” stated the department in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 7.
