Joshco tenants are tired of their living conditions

Tenants of Joscho flats in Dobsonville Extension 3 are tired of their living conditions.

Tenants of Joscho flats in Dobsonville Extension 3 are tired of their living conditions.

On Saturday March 12 a meeting was held at the parking lot with the MMC of housing Mlungisi Mabaso, acting COO of Joshco Themba Mathibe and the ward councillor.

This was after tenants called on Jozi FM to voice their concerns about the flats. Before Mabaso could address the residences there was uproar and they refused for him to speak without seeing the conditions for himself.

A walk around the flats was then conducted and the officials were shown the dustbins that have not been collected for three weeks, the leaks in the walls due to rain, uncut grass and a gate that is not operating which provides easy access for criminals.

Mabaso was very disappointed and had no idea that things were this bad. “This is very disappointing because these flats are less than three years old and the conditions are shocking. There is no justification for the nonsense that is happening here,” he said.

He added that these flats have one of the highest rent collection percentage which sits at 81%. Another issue was that tenants don’t have leases which came as a shock to the MMC but Mathibe shut that down.

How can we collect 81% rent if there are no leases?

“It’s not possible that the tenants don’t have leases especially with the collection rate. The question of tenants having no leases is illogical. I’m not going to entertain it. ,” he said.

“The main issue stems from not receiving help even from our housing supervisors who were appointed by Joshco. We have been complaining from the day we moved here which was two years ago. Minor problems have now escalated to bigger issues and yet no help has been offered. This is why we went to Jozi FM to ask for assistance and for the MMC to come and see for himself,” said Sakele Khumalo, a tenant of Joshco.

He continued to say he was happy that Mabaso came and is hopeful that there will be a change.

Mathibe made it clear that the necessary processes to help the occupants will be taken and change will be made.
