Maduna has been living at his home alone for the past 36 years. His house is not suitable for occupation as it has no electricity and leaks when it’s raining.

It also has a leaking toilet and the yard has not been cleaned. The living conditions are extremely bad and a threat to one’s health which is unacceptable.

The old man sustains himself through finding piece jobs such as cleaning other people’s yards.

With the little money that he gets he buys paraffin, coal and food so that he can be able to eat, he also buys toiletry essentials.

“I have a sister who takes care of me. She takes care of me with the little that she has and sometimes it’s just not enough. I am therefore forced to hustle and see what I can get to make ends meet,” said Maduna.

A local NGO has already cleaned the yard and provided the man with groceries to help sustain his livelihood as part of Mandela Day.
