The event started with all attendees being given a chance to say what it means for them to be women and how they celebrate their womanhood.

The general consensus amongst them all was that as women, they are nurtures and strong but at the same time vulnerability is a part of it all.

While women at the event reminded themselves that they are izimbokodo, they were also reminded that their femininity is also as important.

This was emphasised through the theme as they were encouraged to put on their doeks and lipstick.

Event organiser and one of the founders of Fortress Youth Organisation, Sinah Poho said the event was inspired by the women of 1956 who stood up against injustices.

“Through this event, we are trying to motivate young women while at the same time showing them how to celebrate being women even though they are still young,” said Poho.

Over and above the event being about motivating and celebrating women, it was also aimed at helping those who are less fortunate.

Poho said they had a “gift a stranger” initiative as part of the evet. Through the initiative, they had planned to donate toiletry packs to five strangers who need them the most.

“We raised funds through donations from inside the fortress and put together toiletry packs for those in need.

“The toiletry goodie bag has all the essentials such as toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, face cloth and more including a doek,” explained Poho.

She went on to say that the aim of such an initiative is to spread love and make sure all women feel good about themselves even those who don’t have much.

Fortress Youth Organisation is a Pimville based community organisation which focuses on helping young girls navigate through life and its struggles.

Poho explained that not only do they donate things such as sanitary towels but they mentor the children educate them on topics such as puberty, mental health and other social issues.

They also host workshops where they help them with career guidance when they go to high school.

As the name suggests, Fortress Youth Organisation has become a safe space for young people to express themselves and talk about things they might not be comfortable sharing with parents at home.
