Soccer tournament in Kliptown aims to fight crime

Star Warriors and the Hlokoloza were crowned under 15 and 17 campions of the season.

Star Warriors from Dlamini 1 won 3-2 against the Skeltors, while Hlokoloza from Kliptown won 2-1 against Ghetto Boys from Devland. This was the first time both these teams reached the finals.

The Hlokoloza Mo-Africa tournament champions under 17.

The tournament began Monday, October 3 with eight soccer teams. The under 15s (Star Warriors, Skeltors, Waya Waya and Soweto United) along with the under 17s, (Ghetto Boys, Mighty Rocks, Waya waya and Hlokoloza).

The purpose of this tournament is to keep the children from the streets during school holidays.

“We are trying to eliminate the use of drugs, crime engagement and unnecessary loitering during school holidays,”said Jabulisile Shezi, Crime and Prevention Coordinator from Mo-Afrika.

This makes youngsters realise that life is more than just camping on the street corners consuming hubbly and other substances.

But this helps them stay determined in choosing who and what they want to become in the near future.

Residents came out in numbers to support their upcoming youngsters in sports.

“Seeing these boys playing so good, makes us proud as the community and drives us into supporting them more and more,” said Balungile Mthethwa, one of the spectators.

The players were also awarded along with the acknowledgement of their coaches. Jersey number ten AKA Messi (Lehlohonolo Kgale) was awarded top goal scorer of the tournament.

Jersey number seven AKA Majaivane (Bandile Ntsingila) was awarded man of the match.

Coach Mohau Mokeki of Star Warriors as well as Sphiwe Magopheni of Hlokoloza were awarded coaches of the tournament in acknowledgement of their great and consistent work.
