The idea behind this walk was to educate the society about cancer, especially children’s cancer. Many people don’t have an idea that children can get cancer and they don’t know the different kinds of cancers.

The walk was also about being active and living a healthy lifestyle as a united community of Soweto.

Cancer is a disease which claims a lot of lives and the sad part is that township people are not educated enough about it, while others treat it as a sensitive matter and not talk about it.

“We are not only focusing on cancer in children but other illnesses as well. But the broader vision is to share with the society at large about children cancer and other activities that we could put around to alleviate or to highlight the plight of children with different types of illnesses,” said Ntsieng Lenong, chairperson of Ke Neo Entle.

Also during the fun walk, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) was present to encourage residents to donate blood.

Blood donation awareness at the walk

“Blood donation is something that is frowned upon culturally. People still assume that once they have a stranger’s blood, they would inhabit their spirits and personality traits. After you have been transfused, you’ll still have your old self and no change,” said Poloko Leeu from the SANBS.
