He explains that the song was made specifically for the Grammy awards global category. Unlike his previous collaborations, Bayethe, was made to be enjoyed globally.

“We went into studio to make a song for a Grammy. We looked at what the category wanted and we made a song based on that. We knew we were not making a song for radio or YouTube clips,” explains Bantiwini.

“We made an intentional collaboration, aiming for a Grammy and we got a Grammy.”

South Africa is a country of unity and togetherness and this Grammy has proven that collectively we can reach greater heights. Zakes advises SA musicians to invest more on collaborations.

“We need to collaborate more. Music in its essence is a collaborative effort.

“All of my biggest records and every biggest artist in South Africa have collaborated. There’s no big record in South Africa that an artist has done on their own,” Zakes advices.

Despite South Africa’s big win at the Grammy’s and the massive heroe’s welcome Zakes received from fans and family, the country was shattered by the tragic loss of the biggest Hip Hop artist, AKA and his friend Tibz.

Zakes said, “Getting back in South Africa, having a hero’s welcome and the next thing AKA and Tibz lose their lives. I don’t know how I’m feeling; do I celebrate or wait until after? Do I mourn for dad? A lot has happened and I’m just in limbo.”

According to Zakes, the murder of AKA, Tibz and his father who was also shot dead have made him paranoid.

Something that used to happen to the US rappers finally hits home and now everyone is living in fear.

“Nobody is supposed to die through someone else’s will. I also lost my dad three weeks ago, he was also shot dead four times in the head.

“We are paranoid. I can say that about myself, I am not doing any gigs for the next month because I’m paranoid,” said Zakes.

In the midst of all this, the Grammy has been brought closer to South African artists and it is their greatest win of all times, proving that there’s no barrier between who you are and where you are meant to be.

“Durban record labels brought music closer to their people and it is the same with this Grammy. We are saying to you as South African artists, don’t only think about the SAMA awards but think about the Grammy. It’s so close,” Zakes urges other musicians.

Everything has its beginning and ending and for the Grammy award winner the journey of being a musician has been reached through this award.

“I am working on my final album then I’ll be done. I think I’ve done everything that I wanted to do in the music industry and now I have a Grammy and what more do I want?

“My last album will be a stadium status album introducing future talents,” Zakes concluded.
