Ikotlolong Senior Citizen is a group of elderly people from around Diepkloof who spend their time maintaining physical fitness through exercising, hand work, gardening and choral music.
The group was established in 2004 and thus far caters for about 65 pensioners in the area who spend four days of their week in the hall enjoying the company of one another.

According to Ikotlolong Senior Citizen chairperson, Lydia Ramarumo, the aim of their group is to encourage physical fitness among elderly people in the area so that they can spend their time occupied rather than being left alone in their homes.
Ramarumo added that two of their eldest members are now 90 years old and they are proud to see that they are still active and able to do things by themselves.
During their exercise sessions, the enthusiastic group members dance along to Gqom music which compliments their exercising techniques and later spend their time chatting the day away over lunch.

“We are grateful to stakeholders and companies such as Pick n Pay because this kind gesture shows that they care for the community, especially us elderly people.

“We are also calling on more elderly people from the area to come and join us because maintaining a healthy lifestyle for us means a lot as it can help reduce the risk of chronic medical conditions, but most importantly we want to be there for one another as pensioners,” Ramarumo said.
She added that their group is currently sponsored by the Department of Social Development but they are calling on more stakeholders to come on board to assist.
Co-founder of Pelican Light Foundation, Daniel Boshomane said, “This is a start of many great initiatives that we want to do for the elderly.

“If more sponsorship comes on board we will adopt them full time and as the winter season approaches we are planning to give away blankets to them as sign of the love and respect we have for them,” Boshomane said.
Pick n Pay Customer Service Manager, Lorraine Mogoru said this is one of the initiatives that are very close to their hearts since they believe in giving back to communities they work with.
“We are grateful that they enjoyed their day.
“There are more initiatives from where this came from and we wish they continue staying healthy and wise,” Mogoru said.
