The aim of the initiative is to reduce turnaround times for patients to receive blood.

The purpose of the smart fridge launch is to preserve the lives of the mothers and children through the quicker way of getting blood.
Where before, doctors would have to send samples and wait for blood to be couriered to the hospital.
Ravi Reddy, CEO of SANBS explained that, “The smart fridge is a sophisticated blood bank that we are placing in this hospital.”
“When we are at the laboratory, we do the tests and the doctors at the hospital can go to this fridge and we will give them the verification code to access the blood in time.”

South Africa has many challenges with the health care system and with these innovations they do not want blood to be one of the challenges. They want to be able to save lives.
According to Dr Gary Reubenson, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital representative, this smart fridge innovation will benefit the hospital as well as their patients since this a mother and child health care service.
“We as the facility stand to absolutely benefit both respects to convenience for our health care workers. But far more importantly the quality and care we can provide to our patients,” said Reubenson.
Even though South Africans are facing load shedding the SANBS smart fridge was created with an inverter battery to keep the blood readily available.

Reddy explained that, “The fridge has uninterrupted power supply to operate for a period of eight hours. So if the lights do go off it will still function and maintain the same temperature.”
