Soweto music workshop empowers emerging artists with industry skills

Aspiring musicians gained practical insights into branding, publishing, licensing and content creation during a music industry workshop aimed at building sustainable careers.

Musiconomy hosted its one-day music industry workshop at the Maponya Mall Community Hub on August 1.

The session was designed to empower the next generation of artists with the knowledge, skills, and connections needed to build sustainable careers in music.

Targeted at aspiring musicians, the masterclass bridges the gap between musical talent and the business of becoming a successful recording artist.

Thuso Mogotsi, founder of Think Bigger Workshops, shared that people in creative spaces who specialise in film and music are targeted.

The Think Bigger Workshop is an initiative committed to developing young creatives through education, mentorship, innovation, and industry exposure, while creating meaningful opportunities that contribute to the growth of South Africa’s economy.

‘’Today’s session is all about the business side of music. We have speakers who will touch on different aspects such as publishing, licensing and branding for the emerging artists to be able to sustain themselves with what they are passionate about.

“We are a service provider based in Soweto, and we thought that this is pivotal because we find that such sessions are rarely available in our local communities, yet there is so much talent that can be used as business,’’ said Mogotsi.

Thapelo Modiela shared that he touched on diversifying as an artist and shared his story on his journey of tapping into his creative side.

He shared that he wanted to stand as an example that not only can you venture into music but many other creative spheres and be good at them.

Mmapelo Mabala, an attendee from Alexandra, said, ‘’I was here to understand content creation and music and understand the fundamentals of both. I want to study music, and I believe that this platform will help me reach an informed decision. The most important takeaway from the session is that you are a brand and you should be proud of that.’’

She commended the masterclass team for hosting the workshop, saying that it was an eye-opening experience.
