WARNING: beware of picking up hitchhikers

Police have added that giving lifts to strangers may have deadly consequences.

The Gauteng SAPS Crime Prevention Unit has issued a warning to motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution when it comes to hitchhiking and offering lifts to strangers.

According to the Gauteng SAPS, hitchhiking and offering lifts to strangers increases one’s vulnerability to crime and criminal activity.

The police further urge motorists and pedestrians to think twice before putting themselves in a situation that may pose a safety risk.

The SAPS has provided several safety tips to help prevent crimes related to hitchhiking:

• Trust your instincts and avoid situations that make you feel uncomfortable.

• Consider alternative options to hitchhiking, such as reliable public transport.

• Do not accept rides from drivers who appear intoxicated, aggressive, or suspicious.

• Research your route and let someone know your itinerary before starting your journey.

• Keep your valuables close to you and secure, and consider carrying a fully charged phone and a portable charger.

The SAPS urges anyone with information about criminal activity related to hitchhiking to come forward and report it to the authorities immediately.
