Candlelight vigil in remembrance of Mthokozisi Mvelase at Maponya Mall
In a powerful show of unity, Pimville residents held a prayer walk and candlelight vigil at Maponya Mall in memory of e-hailing driver Mthokozisi Mvelase.
The community of Pimville gathered at Maponya Mall on 20 August for a candlelight vigil and prayer service in memory of e-hailing driver Mthokozisi Mvelase, who was shot and burnt in his car in what is believed to have been taxi-related violence.
Spiritual leaders and residents walked through the mall praying for safety before assembling near the entrance where Mvelase was killed.

“This has become something very close to our hearts as a community,” said Anita Mokoena, a community member who organised the event.

“We cannot offer much, but we believe that in prayer, we can achieve more, and we call on God to intervine.”

Mvelase’s family attended the vigil and expressed gratitude for the support.

“I want to thank the community of Soweto and the world at large,” said his aunt, Zanele Khuzwayo.
“People have been with us through this tragedy, through phone calls, messages and contributions, and it is appreciated.”

The gathering ended with the lighting of candles and a closing prayer.
