The Zulu family from Diepkloof Zone 4 is appealing for donations after a fire destroyed a two-room shack and many of their belonging.

Family member Nompumelelo Zulu said they were at their other home in Diepkloof Zone 6 when neighbours alerted them of the fire at midnight.

“It took us about five minutes to get there, but everything had already been destroyed.”

“The shack belonged to my brother and many of our belongings were stored there,” she said.

Zulu said the family is grateful that no one was inside the shack when the fire broke out.

“We are thankful no one was injured because the outcome could have been fatal. We are asking for donations of a bed, clothing and building materials to help us rebuild,” she said.

Although the family’s RDP house was not damaged, the loss of the shack has left them in need of assistance.

Zulu added that Disaster Management has provided food parcels, a stove, a kettle and bottled water.

The family suspects that an electrical fault may have caused the fire.

The EFF ward 27 representative, Thabo Mollo, said community members and party volunteers helped clear the rubble and are working to mobilise further support.

“We urge anyone who is able to donate building materials, clothing or other essential items to come forward and assist the family. This could happen to any of us,” said Mollo.
