Maponya Mall Launches Threads Up Charity Store to Uplift the Soweto Community and Help Live the Upside

Maponya Mall, Soweto, Johannesburg proudly launched the Threads Up Charity Store on 16th of December 2025, reinforcing its on-going commitment to sustainability, dignity, and community upliftment within Soweto.

The initiative called on shoppers and the broader community to donate pre-loved clothing and shoes, encouraging responsible consumption while supporting those most in need. Through meaningful partnerships with Legacy Community Service, Sakh’ulwazi Foundation and Kagcisham Women Development Center, Maponya Mall focused on identifying and supporting vulnerable members of the community, including child headed households and families facing financial hardship.

Donated items were transformed into a pop-up charity store within the mall, providing beneficiaries with a dignified shopping experience where they could select clothing free of charge. This approach ensured that families were supported with essential items while preserving choice and dignity.

With the generous support of Maponya Mall tenants and the community, the Threads Up Charity Store positively impacted 70 families during the festive season. Maponya Mall extends its heartfelt thanks to all shoppers and partners who embodied the spirit of giving, demonstrating the power of collective action in building a more caring and inclusive Soweto.

Following the success of the initiative, the Threads Up Store will be opening soon to the public, offering clothing from as little as R30. All proceeds will go towards fundraising for local non-profit organizations. Maponya Mall is committed to our continued goal of helping our community live the upside.
