JMPD targets intoxicated drivers across Joburg
Targeted operations and routine patrols led to the arrest of 180 drunk drivers in hotspots like Soweto and Eldorado Park.
JMPD arrested 180 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during operations conducted across Soweto, Eldorado Park, Lenasia, Randburg and the Joburg CBD.
The arrests took place between June 23 and 29 through targeted operations, public complaints and routine patrols.
According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, this intensified focus on drunk driving is part of JMPD’s ongoing commitment to improving road safety.

“Driving under the influence remains a major contributor to serious accidents, injuries and fatalities,” he emphasised.
JMPD Chief of police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca, said the statistics from the past week are a stark reminder of the ongoing challenge posed by drunk driving.
“Our officers continue to work tirelessly, day and night, to remove intoxicated drivers from our roads, thereby preventing potential tragedies. We commend their dedication and vigilance,” said Jaca.
JMPD has urged all motorists to act responsibly and to make alternative transport arrangements if they plan to consume alcohol, including using a designated driver, public transport, or e-hailing services.
