Police captain kills two, then himself in Protea shooting

On July 26, a police captain allegedly killed his girlfriend and her brother at her birthday gathering in Protea before injuring three others and taking his own life. SAPS is investigating two murder cases, three attempted murders, and an inquest.

A woman and her brother were shot dead, allegedly by a police captain, in Protea on July 26.

It is alleged that the girlfriend, also a police officer, was at her home celebrating her birthday when he called her aside.

Eyewitnesses said he then drew a firearm and shot her and her brother. Three other people were injured before he turned the gun on himself.

Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni expressed sorrow over the incident and sent condolences to the affected families.

“We give our members these tools to protect themselves against criminals. It is disheartening to see the very same tools being used to kill their loved ones.

“I urge our members to use the Employee Health and Wellness facilities to help them deal with any problems they might be facing, whether work or personal.”

Two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and an inquest docket were opened at the Protea Police Station for further investigation.
