Local residents of Kliptown and Pimville took to the streets in protest once again on July 18 over prolonged power outages affecting the area.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) advised motorists of ongoing protest action affecting parts of Pimville and Kliptown.

The affected areas are:

• Klipspruit Valley Road
• The extended closure between the Modjadji Street traffic circle and the Union Avenue traffic circle.

Ward councillor Sebenzile Mabuza said: “The protest is ongoing from earlier this week. City Power has not yet restored electricity to all areas; however, Zone 9 has electricity.

“I have enquired with the general manager, who confirmed that they are working on it. I have requested a formal written communication that can be sent to community groups to help calm tensions.

“The roads that are blocked are key routes, and it is the weekend, with funerals taking place and people travelling to work, so there will be chaos.”

Law enforcement officers are actively monitoring the situation, managing traffic flow and ensuring public safety.

JMPD warned:
Motorists travelling through or near Pimville and Kliptown are strongly urged to avoid Klipspruit Valley Road and use the following alternative routes:

• Motorists travelling from the north or south can divert via Chris Hani Road to bypass the Pimville and Kliptown congestion.
• Use Moroka Nancefield Road as an alternative route to bypass the closed traffic circles.
• Commuters heading south or east can use Main Road through Eldorado Park to reconnect with major routes.
• Those travelling further west or north-west can use Elias Motsoaledi Road to bypass the affected arterial routes.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution when approaching these areas.

Expect delays on all connecting routes and do not attempt to force your way through road blockages.
