Local beauty crowned 2023 Mrs Soweto

Apart from the glitz and glam of the event, the Mrs Soweto Empowerment Programme is not to be mistaken for just another pageant, according to the organisers.

The Mrs Soweto Empowerment Programme hosted a black tie gala event at the Soweto Theatre this past weekend to crown the first ever Mrs Soweto.

The highly anticipated event drew huge crowds from Soweto and beyond.

Tasked with the difficult work of selecting the first ever Mrs Soweto, the judging panel was made up of singers, Lloyd Cele and Judith Sephuma and former Miss Soweto, Ludina Ngwenya.

When all had been said and done, Mel Tlhapi from Mofolo Central emerged victorious and took the crown as the first Mrs Soweto.

Fatima Moyane and Pertunia Malingisa were crowned first and second princesses respectively.

Apart from the glitz and glam of the event, the Mrs Soweto Empowerment Programme is not to be mistaken for just another pageant, according to the organisers.

The focus is on making a positive impact in the community. By taking part in the programme, entrants had to take part in various empowerment activities including entrepreneurship and community involvement.

“This is all about empowering women and making a difference in our communities. These women participating today are graduating from an empowerment programme,” said Dr Tshegofatso Mathe the CEO of Mrs Soweto.

She added that proceeds from the event will be donated to charity aimed at bettering the lives of new mothers and their new-born babies.

Also, in keeping up with the theme of empowerment, a three year university bursary including accommodation, stipend and computer for a deserving beneficiary of Mrs Soweto’s choice will be awarded.

As the queen, Tlhapi will be driving a Renault Kiger for the year of her reign from Group 1 Renault The Glen. She will also wear an original Jenna Clifford creation crown as part of a long list of her prizes.

Back to the night of glitz and glam, Refiole Motsei from Jozi FM and Thapelo TABZ Motloung held it down on stage as the hosts with the most. Lloyd Cele also took to the stage and made it easy for the crowd to fall in love with the Mrs Soweto Empowerment Programme.
