Gauteng police foil planned armed robbery in Orlando

A gang of 11 men is suspected of planning an armed robbery.

Johannesburg police officers arrested a gang of 11 suspects who were on their way to allegedly commit an armed robbery in Orlando, Soweto on Thursday.

Police intelligence received Intel about the suspects who were planning a robbery in the area.

Police then intercepted the group of suspects aged between 33 and 43 along Mooki Street and Soweto Highway as they were travelling to their target area.

During the search, police seized three unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as three vehicles which were going to be used to carry out the planned robbery.

“The swift takedown was as a result of the operationalisation of information received from Crime Intelligence.

“The police held an observation on the suspects and decided to conduct a takedown before the suspects could commit the planned robbery,” said Captain Jeff Phora.

11 suspects were arrested by the Gauteng Police.

The suspects are facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as conspiracy to commit an armed robbery.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Orlando Magistrates’ Court.
