Moroka sits on position 12 on the top 30 police stations in the category of rape, with 54 cases reported in the same period, 17 counts higher when compared to the same period during 2022.
According to the crime stats, this makes Moroka police station among the highest increase in rape cases reported in the province.
“Moroka has been reported as one of the areas with high rape cases. That is more than 23 people a day and we are saying it cannot be that when we have 16 Days of Activism where government wastes money and resources while centres and police stations should be equipped to do what they need to do.

“In certain police stations you find that they have no rape kits, or victim centres that will ensure that women can talk about their ordeals in a safe space. In certain areas, they are forced to disclose in a charge room, so we are saying something needs to change,” said Msimanga.
Recent crime stats by the police minister Bheki Cele further indicated that 293 children were killed during the period between July and September. In addition to this, 361 incidents of attempted murder and 1 820 of Assault GBH were perpetrated against children.

Minister Cele also added that 10 516 Rape incidents were reported to the SAPS, 4 726 rape incidents of which took place at either the home of the rape victim or the home of the perpetrator which are known to the victim.
“We don’t believe that the number of reported cases actually amount to the number of incidents that occur when we look at the probability of cases that go unreported because when they get there, they become victims for the second time.
“We know of cases where victims are turned back because social workers are only available on certain days.
“That can’t be right. Rape is happening at an alarming rate and enough is not being done to fight and bring perpetrators to book,” Msimanga slammed.
He added that the government needed to do something drastically to turn the tide when it comes to the scourge of GBV and blamed the lack of resources at police stations at the centre of low and unsuccessful conviction rate.
