Sakhumzi Maqubela, the owner of Sakhumzi Restaurant in Orlando West has partnered with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo to launch a new branch at Zoo Lake.

The official unveiling of the new restaurant took place on March 14.

Sakhumzi took over the space previously occupied by Moyo Restaurant which had been abandoned for a while. Maqubela said that it was not easy making this dream come true because of the drug abusers and the criminal activities that had been taking place at the facility.

“The people who helped me get in here and for this to be possible are Councillor Magwentshu, Johannesburg Property Company, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo and Bohlale who has always been there pushing. The councillor of this area, Tim Truluck was very supportive even when other councillors were giving us challenges and making this process take longer,” stated Maqubela.

Launching the new restaurant marked one of South Africa’s biggest moments and achievements as one of Soweto’s well known entrepreneurs gets to branch out, creating more jobs and bringing South African tourism to life.

Councillor Lubabalo Magwentshu said, “I commend Sakhumzi Restaurant and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo for their visionary leadership and dedication to making Johannesburg truly a world-class destination.

“Let us embrace this new chapter with enthusiasm and optimism knowing that together we can create a brighter future for all residents of the City of Johannesburg.”

The launch was graced by familiar faces from the City including MMC Kenny Kunene and Councillor Kabelo Gwamanda the Executive Mayor.

Siphesihle Magasela one of the employees at Sakhumzi said, “This for me means growth and I like growth. I’m excited because this means there may be possibly new positions. It also means more people will get employed in this branch decreasing the high rate of unemployment.
