100 pairs of school shoes donated to Thubelihle Secondary School

This initiative was started to ensure that learners do not miss school this winter due to not having school shoes.

Thubelihle Secondary School received a generous donation of school shoes for learners in need from the award-winning educator and mathematician, Mlungisi Nkosi.

The White City Jabavu based school was graced with a visit from the teacher and his team on the morning of May 15.
This was one visit that helped put a smile on a lot of learners who were wearing sneakers, old and ripped school shoes.

To achieve this goal and make sure this initiative comes to life, Nkosi raised funds through his social media followers and has also partnered with a local manufacturer, School Lashushu.

“When I came to Thubelihle Secondary School I saw a desperate situation where some of the learners could not come to school with dignity because they do not have proper school shoes,” said Nkosi.

“So, as part of our our initiative to make education accessible, we also want to make sure that we restore dignity to the learners because I believe that dignity does play a role in a learner being able to actively learn and engage in the classroom.”

Nkosi has shown huge care for education in South Africa by firstly building the Maths and Science Centre that is based in Honeydew, Johannesburg, and now by donating school shoes to learners in need.

He then shared with Urban News that he would like to push the drive to more schools beyond Soweto.

“Not only in Soweto but there are so many schools I’ve since discovered that have the same challenge as Thubelihle.

“That is why I am looking into partnerships with other stakeholders and organisations that can really help us to alleviate the issue of learners being shoeless,” said Nkosi.

The learners, teachers, and the principal were very happy and grateful of this act of service from Nkosi.

To express the school’s appreciation, the Principal of Thubelihle Secondary School, Donald Mkhengu said, “I am so happy that today we were able to receive this beautiful offer of shoes from Mlungisi.

“We are so happy about this initiative and I think if it can continue like this it can help a lot of children who come from underprivileged backgrounds.”
