Beware of bogus institutions – Higher Education and Training warns

These unregistered institutions, often called “fly-by-night” colleges, lure unsuspecting students with promises of recognised qualifications.

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has issued a stern warning to prospective students to be cautious when registering at institutions of higher learning.

These unregistered institutions, often called “fly-by-night” colleges, lure unsuspecting students with promises of recognised qualifications.

However, qualifications obtained from these institutions are deemed “fake” and will not be recognised for employment or further studies.

To avoid falling prey to these scams, the DHET urges students and parents to verify the registration status of institutions before applying. This can be done by:

• Checking for a certificate of registration from the DHET on the premises of the college.
• Visiting the DHET website at https://www.dhet.gov.za/ to confirm registration status.
• Contacting the DHT’s toll-free number at 0800 872 222 for assistance
