Soweto community comes together to celebrate elders

Vukukhanye Zion collaborated with other organisations to host a Thanksgiving event at Mofolo Arts and Culture in Soweto on March 15.

The event honoured local elders, with over 10 recipients receiving blankets and groceries. The successful event was made possible through generous donations from various supporting organisations.

Notably, the event was blessed with the presence of an elder who had reached the remarkable age of 102.

According to President Archbishop Bhekinkosi Nkosi, one of the organisers, the event aimed to promote respect and support for often-overlooked elderly community members. The goal was to emphasise the importance of honouring parents while they are still alive.

This event was a testament to Vukukhanye Zion’s commitment to uplifting the community, particularly the elderly.

As an organisation/church, Vukukhanye Zion strives to promote the well-being and dignity of vulnerable individuals, and this event was a shining example of their efforts.

Antoinette Sithole, sister of the legendary Hector Pieterson, shared her thoughts: “Meeting someone who has reached 102 is truly amazing.

“It makes me feel younger and inspires me to wonder if I will achieve the same milestone. Most importantly, our children should learn to respect life, as this is key to living a long and fulfilling life.”

Dr Ntokozo Hlongwane, managing director of Farmers Market, explained that their support for the event was a strategic business decision.

By donating meat, they aimed to make a positive impact on the community, reflecting their commitment to social responsibility.

This first Thanksgiving event honouring elders marked the beginning of Vukukhanye Zion’s journey to recognise and appreciate seniors across local communities, with the aspiration to expand nationally.
