Training session empowers local farmers

By reviving traditional methods to self-sufficiency, Reel Life NPC hopes to inspire a new generation of urban gardeners.

Reel Life NPC, supported by CitiBank, recently conducted a training session and distribution of Household Garden in a Box at Shomang Primary School on March 19.

Over 100 attendees attended the event to learn about the importance of food security and gain hands-on skills in growing their own food.

The training aimed to empower individuals to reduce their reliance on purchased food by cultivating their gardens.

“Although we haven’t yet met our target, our goal is to empower 500 households in Soweto to grow their food.

“Each ‘Household Garden in a Box’ can feed a family of four for an entire year, requiring just 16 square meters of space and two litres of water daily,” said Hope Radebe, project manager for Reel Life NPC.

Ncebo Zungu, a young farmer partnered with Reel Life, is committed to providing ongoing support to session attendees, offering regular check-ins to ensure their gardens are blooming and providing guidance to overcome any challenges that may arise.

Moeketsi Mndaweni, an attendee, showed interest, noting that growing their gardens is a great idea, especially since store-bought vegetables can be pricey and often contain unhealthy chemicals.

As Reel Life NPC continues to work towards a more food-secure future, its efforts serve as a powerful reminder that even the smallest actions can make a significant difference.
