Customers urged not pay technicians or contractors for repairs – City Power
City Power technicians and contractors are prohibited from demanding payment for any work performed in their network.
City Power warned its customers on March 30 not to pay any technician or contractor for repairs or other work related to their network.
City Power had several incidents where customers paid technicians thousands of rands for unauthorised reconnections and, unfortunately, after finding out, City Power disconnected their power supply.
This left customers with a more significant financial burden, as they had to pay for reconnection and penalty fees besides their outstanding electricity bills.

City Power urged its customers who have been disconnected or face a disconnection because of outstanding electricity bills not to pay anyone who promises to reconnect their power supply because it may result in penalty fees and could lead to criminal prosecution.
City Power urged those with outstanding bills to visit the Service Delivery Centre to pay or sign an acknowledgement of debt (AoD) and commit to a payment plan.
Upon paying, customers will receive a receipt, which will serve as proof of payment and is necessary for future issues.
If approached by anyone soliciting payment for services such as repairing the overhead or underground cables, a mini-substation, streetlights and other City Power equipment, report this to City Power’s security on 0800 002 587 or call centre toll-free on 0800 202 925.
