City Power suspends load reduction measures indefinitely

A sense of relief for Joburg residents as the power utility announces an end to scheduled power cuts, citing a significant reduction of tempered meters and illegal connections.

In a welcome move, City Power has announced the indefinite suspension of load reduction measures, effective immediately.

This decision is due to the utility’s efforts to address illegal connections and meter tampering while promoting energy efficiency.

According to CP spokesperson Isaac Mangena, the suspension of load reduction measures reflects their commitment to providing a reliable electricity supply while balancing the needs of their customers and safeguarding the integrity of their grid infrastructure.

“Several key factors contributed to this decision, including the successful crackdown on illegal connections and meter tampering,” he said.

CP has reported a notable reduction in pressure on the electricity grid, with many customers approaching the utility for legal reconnections.

Additionally, CP’s energy efficiency and demand-side management efforts have encouraged customers to adopt efficient use of energy, resulting in the de-loading of high and medium-voltage electrical networks under severe stress.

The recent Token Identifier (TID) conversion from KRN1 to KRN2 also played a crucial role in stabilizing electricity consumption and supply across the city.

While CP is thrilled about this development, they stress the importance of continued responsible electricity usage.

The utility warns that any significant change in consumer behaviour, such as a spike in high electricity consumption or illegal connections, could necessitate the reintroduction of load reduction measures

CP appreciates the understanding and cooperation of customers during this challenging period and remains committed to ensuring a sustainable and reliable electricity supply for all residents and businesses.

“We rely on the continued cooperation from our customers to minimize power supply interruptions,” said Mangena.

The suspension of load reduction measures is a welcome relief for residents and businesses, who can now enjoy a more reliable electricity supply.
