Operation Shanela cracks down on crime in Gauteng

The operation led by the provincial vommissioner of police in Gauteng aims to maximize police visibility and stamp the authority of the State.

Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni led the multi-disciplinary Operation Shanela in Johannesburg’s Jeppe district on April 3.

More than 40 illegal immigrants were arrested while a total of 948 suspects were apprehended during overnight tracing operations, with 257 linked to crimes against women and children.

A 42-year-old was arrested with drugs worth approximately R100 000 at Bezvalley.

Six liquor establishments were fined and ordered to close for operating without liquor licences.
