SANCA Soweto hosted an International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking event on June 25 at Elkah Stadium in Rockville.

The event was held under the theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” which emphasises the urgent need to prioritise proactive approaches to societal issues before they worsen.

Speaking to Urban News, SANCA Soweto project coordinator Moses Seaga said it was encouraging to see many young people actively engaging in sports as a positive and constructive way to fight the spread of drug abuse.

“The event was a success and a great initiative, and we hope and believe that going forward we will see more young people getting involved in sports, playing soccer, and finding ways to stay busy instead of turning to substances.

“Young people, and even the elderly, need to understand that drugs are dangerous, and once someone becomes addicted, it becomes very difficult to stop,” he said.

Seaga also stated that those who are victims of drug abuse should know SANCA Soweto is available to support them. If they need help, they are encouraged to contact the organisation or visit one of its four offices located across Soweto.

Ke Moja programme coordinator Nikie Mashele said the goal was to show the community that instead of turning to substances, people can focus on healthier alternatives like physical activity and educational programmes.

“Through this programme, we want the youth to see that there is life and enjoyment without drugs.

“We are also encouraging the community by showing that help is available through SANCA, and that anyone who truly wants to change can overcome addiction and improve their lives,” said Mashele.
