Unity@One takes Pimville learners to Hector Pieterson Museum

The NPO took local learners to the Hector Pieterson Museum on September 24, teaching them about South Africa’s history and the sacrifices made for education.

Unity@One, a community-based NPO founded in 2023, is dedicated to assisting learners in schools and within the community with challenges such as illiteracy, while also supporting the elderly to lead and live more comfortable lives.

On September 24, the organisation took a group of youngsters to the Hector Pieterson Museum in Orlando West.

With one of its core visions being to empower learners through knowledge, the visit aimed to help them gain a deeper understanding of South Africa’s rich history and to encourage an appreciation for the sacrifices made by historic figures in ensuring better education in local areas, particularly in African languages.

“This day and outing were to recognise and celebrate the historic wealth of our nation. Our history plays a role in our daily lives.

The children enjoyed this experience as it was their first time visiting the museum and I hope that they have learnt more about Hector Pieterson and other heroines.

“It will also benefit them as they are going to high school, giving them an advantage as they will already have some background knowledge,” said Lerato Mofoeng, founder of Unity@One.

The Hector Pieterson Museum is considered a must-visit landmark. It is a vital space for understanding South Africa’s history and the transition from apartheid to democracy.

This experience was an educational one for the learners to recognise and learn on the changes the heroines have made for a better democracy.

The museum is well presented, educational and offers powerful insight into the triumph of the human spirit.

Mofoeng concluded by expressing her hope that this experience will benefit the learners greatly and help them appreciate the heroines and heroes who brought about change in the country.
