This year, Jazz In The Lights offers a vibrant reminder of South Africa’s thriving music scene, bringing together legendary performers and exciting new voices that continue to shape Joburg’s cultural pulse.

Set against the natural beauty of the Joburg Zoo, the festival promises a sizzling day of soulful sounds, shared experiences, and family-friendly entertainment.

The deputy director of Joburg Arts, Heritage and Culture, Ntshuxeko Manganye, said the event’s carefully curated programme showcases an incredible line-up of emerging talent, established artists, and celebrated legends, reflecting gender inclusivity, disability representation, and geographical diversity across South Africa’s music landscape.

Jazz In The Lights continues to attract a kaleidoscope of attendees from across communities and cultures, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere where music lovers gather to celebrate the richness of Mzansi’s creative spirit.

The 2026 Jazz in the Lights instalment features an impressive line-up of Mzansi’s renowned artists such as Jimmy Dludlu, Dumza Maswana, Andile Yenana, Afrika Mkhize, Malcolm Jiyane, Xhanti Nokwali, Brenda Mtambo, Rorisang Sechele and Msaki. This promises to be a memorable day with unforgettable performances.

“Adding an international flavour to this year’s programmes, Arts Alive, in partnership with the Embassy of Portugal, proudly presents internationally acclaimed Portuguese jazz vocalist Maria João at Jazz in the Lights.

“Renowned for her exceptional vocal flexibility and masterful improvisational skills, Maria João’s distinctive sound and expressive performance style promise an unforgettable musical experience,” Manganye said.

“Beyond the stage, Jazz In The Lights is designed as a family outing with something for everyone: younger guests can explore the Zoo’s walking trails, encounter friendly farm animals, and engage in experiences that encourage curiosity about wildlife and conservation.

“Families are invited to slow down, soak up fresh sounds from emerging artists and classics from SA music past and current legends. Reconnect with nature and enjoy quality time in a safe and vibrant environment.”

The festival unfolds as a relaxed picnic and cultural celebration where music, food and community come together.

Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets, cushions and camping chairs, creating a shared communal atmosphere as audiences lounge on the lawns while enjoying world-class jazz performances surrounded by nature.
