The Gauteng Provincial Government will convene a stakeholder meeting next week as it seeks long-term solutions to immigration-related challenges amid growing tensions across the province.

Speaking on the issue, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said the provincial government is promoting dialogue and engagement to address concerns around immigration constructively and lawfully.

Lesufi said government is implementing measures to maintain stability and ensure public safety ahead of the planned shutdown.

While reaffirming government’s support for the constitutional right to peaceful protest, he warned that criminality and unlawful conduct would not be tolerated.

He urged residents to exercise their democratic rights responsibly and engage through lawful channels while government works with stakeholders to find sustainable solutions to challenges facing communities.

The stakeholder meeting is expected to bring together various role players to discuss concerns, encourage dialogue and explore practical interventions aimed at addressing immigration-related issues across Gauteng.
