UJ claims Johannesburg derby win over Wits

UJ has won the Johannesburg derby against Wits in Varsity Netball round 4 2026, at the Callie Human Hall in Bloemfontein on August 31.

UJ remained unbeaten after the Bumper Weekend 2 of Varsity Netball 2026, clinching a 58- 50 win against Wits. The game was an end-to-end battle in the derby, with neither team willing to give in.

The in-form Orange Army managed to establish a three-goal cushion after the first quarter, leading 14-11.

In the second quarter, Wits managed to draw the scores level on a couple of occasions, with Oratile Mokone particularly impressive as she made her presence felt across the court.

At half-time, they kept the lead at 27-23. UJ kept their eye on their prize in the third quarter despite the Witsies continuing to threaten during power play. The intensity showed no signs of dropping as the teams headed into the final, with the score 43-38 in UJ’s favour.

UJ was simply outstanding in the shooting circle and, to no surprise, built a healthy goal difference. Kadijat Abubaka was once again sublime for the Orange Army, helping her team maintain their grip on the contest and sealing the 58-50 victory.

Maties- UP Tuks
UP- Tuks claimed back- to- back wins as they comprehensively beat Maties 66- 40. The three-time champions from Pretoria took the lead after 15 minutes, although the first 15 minutes were tightly contested. Tuks led with a four-goal lead at 12- 8.

In the second quarter, the Stripe Generation made a real move and took a substantial lead of 32-15 at halftime. The third quarter produced much of the same, with Maroon Machine having to play catch-up.

Tuks stretched their lead to 46- 26. As the match concluded in the final, Tuks secured a 60- 4 victory.
CUT- MADIBAZ

CUT created history when they beat Madibaz 41- 36 for their first-ever Varsity Netball victory. The clash between the two was one of the most anticipated games of round 4. In their second period, the two sides remained evenly matched, but Madibaz edged ahead 21-15 heading into halftime.

The third quarter belonged to CUT. They played excellent netball as a team and found their way within two goals of the Eastern Cape outfit.

The comeback gave them a massive confidence boost heading into the final 15 minutes and with the scoreboard reading 27- 25 in their opponents’ favour. CUT made a stunning comeback and secured a historic 41- 36 victory.

UFS Kovsies- NWU Eagles

NWU Eagles returned to winning ways with a narrow 50- 48 victory over UFS Kovsies in the last match of round 4. The visitors from Potchefstroom took a 13- 11 lead into the mini break.

In the second quarter, the Eagles went into halftime leading 24-23. The third quarter between these two old rivals was a bruising affair, with Kovsies managing to level the score at 37-all.

In the final 15 minutes, Kovsies refused to give up, but the clock was against them as the Eagles held on for a 50-48 victory.
