Riverlea's got flair

Fashionista of the week has to go to Phindile Thathi (20) who resides in Riverlea.

Thathi is a second-year student in Mining Engineering at the University of Witwatersrand and has a special to her style in clothing and perception in life.

She used to sketch outfits for girls who were attending matric banquets but recently finds herself scouting for people with the same talent.

“It’s challenging and besides that, there’s a scarcity in females, so I figured if I don’t want to struggle with like getting a job, just do something that is wanted, desired,” responded Thathi on why she chose to study Mining Engineering.

The fashionista has to multitask between her studies and her project.

Thathi has brought 35% into her friends programming business where she will be focusing on the media and entertainment aspects, the programming app is called GMC and it will be launching in next year.

The media brand is said to focus on modelling, on actors, actresses, authors and everything related to media.

The ambitious business woman looks to partnering with UJ Design Crew so that when the students have something to showcase, then, her brand can fall in with the modelling and promoting.

Thathi said: “UJ always has a UJ fashion Week and it’s exciting. It’s really big”.

The fashion trends for autumn and winter are “Jerseys and colour. It has to be big baggy jerseys, over super tight skinny jeans and running shoes.

“Best thing ever. I’m not going to lie to you, best thing ever. Coats are always there, just try to deviate from your general trench coats and just go for over-sized collars, the loosed the better.”

Thathi expresses her feelings about buying cheap clothes but also making sure that you have a well-blended outfit.

“I feel like there’s this perception that people have things that are in town should stay in town, its perfectly fine to buy one article, not like you have to dress like Bree Street or Small Street, no, just buy one specific item in town and then just go to Mr Price buy your jeans.

“Jet has the best tang tops on earth, I’m on a budget, I’m a student, it doesn’t make sense for me to dress up in like R1000 stuff. If you want one really expensive clothing article, just go buy coats here at the Plaza, they stunning.”

The fashionista gave important advice to both sexes: “Just buy this proper pair of shoes and everything else can be a crop out, just make sure that your shoes are fine and your hair is great and everything will be cool.”
