According to Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora, three illegal miners had run to the Springs Police Station to report a possible crime.
“They took police to where they believed their friend might have been harmed and police found their friend had been killed. His legs and hands had been tied with a rope and he had been shot in the head,” says Capt Ramphora.
This is the second illegal miner to be killed near Grootvlei mine in less than a week.
He says it is alleged that the murder is connected to differences within the illegal mining community as the three men who reported the matter to police they were with the deceased when a group of men confronted them about illegal mining issues.
“The miners ran for their lives, but one of them was caught and could not get away. Fearing the worst, the friends ran to the police station,” says Capt Ramphora.
No one has been arrested and police appeal for the community’s assistance to arrest the murderers.
