Assaulted over biltong

Phillip Labuschagne and his wife Rika had a bad experience at Strubenvale Pick n Pay last Thursday which they will not easily forget.

Pick n Pay did, however, seek a speedy resolution which met with Labuschagne’s approval.

When Labuschagne pointed out a mouldy piece of biltong to the butchery manager, it ended in an argument which drew the attention of several security guards, and shoppers.

The guards gathered around Labuschagne, who alleges that one of the guards grabbed him from behind, got his arm around his neck and proceeded to drag him down one of the shops aisles.

According to Labuschagne’s sister-in-law, Hannelie van der Gryp, they asked Tanya van Wyk, a staff member at Pick n Pay, for the video footage as they wanted to open a case at the police station and wanted the tape as evidence, but when she told them it would take too long, they left it at that.

When approached by the Advertiser, Van Wyk was not prepared to comment.

According to Pick n Pay Gauteng supermarkets general manager Chris Hawhinney, they regret the altercation that took place in the store between Labuschagne and the butchery manager.

“Senior management have met Labuschagne and his wife to resolve the issue. No charges have been laid against Pick n Pay staff and we have taken steps to ensure that this type of incident does not happen again,” he says.

Hawhinney concludes that they are conducting a full investigation into the actions of the security guards which were involved in the incident.

Labuschagne confirmed that a compromise had been reached between himself and store management and he did not wish to take further action.
