Women’s wellbeing session

Encouraging women to continually empower themselves was the theme for the day at the Alberton City Hall last Thursday, when women from Law Enforcement agencies, Correctional Services and other departments within the Ekurhuleni metro gathered for a well-being session.

The EMPD and other officials wanted to let women know that they should come out of their shells when experiencing abuse. The event was also a preparation for the Women’s Day celebrations.

Deputy Chief of Police Ugeshni Naidoo addressed everyone at the event and touched on all issues impacting women’s lives as well as on opportunities that are out there for women to seize.

“You as women must rise to the existing challenges and fully utilise opportunities at your disposal for amelioration of your lives, your families and communities. Let your aim be to build, encourage, motivate and support one anther,” she said.

Helen Koko from Legal Aid said they give advice to women on various issues, including domestic violence, that women are confronted with in their daily lives.

An ex-convict who is on parole related and shared how her experiences inside and outside of prison have impacted her life for the good.

Louise Choeu, an occupational healthcare nurse, afforded advise on the importance of women undergoing regular screening and for them to take responsibility for their own psychological and social well-being.

Acting Director at the EMPD Academy, Carin Heyneke, stated the importance of women taking pride in their uniforms as well the proper manner in which they should carry themselves both in their personal and professional lives.
