Different subjects schools offer

Not all schools in Springs offer the same subjects, some offer more specialised subjects.

If you are a student in Grade 8 or 9, you need to start thinking about what career you would like and choose your subjects accordingly.

The schools in Springs all offer the compulsory subjects which are English, Afrikaans, life orientation and either maths or maths literacy. They also offer the more common subjects such as physical science, history, geography, accounting, natural science and life science.

Different schools offer different specialised subjects, so choosing subjects becomes a bigger decision and you have a lot more subjects to choose from.

Although in Gr 9 you may not know what career you want to be in, choose the subjects you are interested in knowing more about.

Most schools in Springs offer tourism and/or computer application technology, known as CAT, like Hoƫrskool Hugenote and Dr Johan Jurgens High School. But Hugenote goes a step further by also offering the more specialised subject of IT as well. Hugenote also offers more practical subjects like consumer studies, civil technology, graphic design and art.

Johan Jurgens goes a step further for the Gr 12 students and offers them religious studies as a matric subject.

If you are having trouble deciding what subjects to choose, it would be a good idea to ask your school psychologist or guidance counsellor for advice and help.

They are trained to help you decide on the best subjects for you as an individual student.

Protea School is a very technical school as it offers mechanical technology, civil technology, hospitality and tourism. Olympia Park School offers graphic design and mechanical engineering as some of their additional subjects.

Springs Boys’ High is an all boys school, so they offer more trade related subjects such as electrical technology, mechanical technology, civil technology and engineering graphics and design (technical drawing).

Springs Girls’ High is an all girl’s school and offers subjects that are more suitable for girls like tourism, consumer studies, economics and visual arts.

When you move into the final three years of high school, it is important to choose subjects that enable you to work to your strengths, challenge you to make the most of your capabilities, give you the knowledge that you need for your career and ambitions after you leave school, offer a range of subjects (think about choosing a balance between theoretical and practical subjects), provide life skills and are your choice and not the choices of others.
