According to Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora the guards were on their way out of the building walking towards their armoured vehicle, when one armed robber surprised them.
“This man started shooting at the guards and slightly wounded one guard in his leg, but it was not serious,” says Capt Ramphora, adding that the robbers tried to reach their weapons, but could not.
More robbers were waiting on the premises in a double cab bakkie, while more were waiting in a Mercedes Benz and an Audi A4 outside in the street.
“The men waiting in the vehicles opened fire and bullets were flying everywhere and people were running away, so that they wouldn’t get shot,” says Capt Ramphora.
According to Capt Ramphora, the robbers took an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene, heading in the direction of KwaThema.
The manager of Trade Centre was not prepared to comment.
No arrests have been made.
